Where we go from LaGuardia
LaGuardia's catchment is tighter than JFK's and the runs are shorter. Manhattan, Queens and the Bronx are the bulk of it, all close enough that the ground leg is rarely the constraint on the day.
Northward runs are the ones worth knowing about: LaGuardia to Westchester or Connecticut avoids Manhattan entirely via the Whitestone or Throgs Neck crossings, which makes it a considerably better arrival airport than JFK for anyone heading to Greenwich, Stamford or White Plains.
Brooklyn from LaGuardia is the awkward one — the BQE is the only sensible route and it is unreliable in the evening peak. Allow more time than the mileage suggests.
Why LaGuardia is the most forgiving airport in New York
Nine miles, mostly parkway, with two viable approaches. Fewer things can go wrong here than on the JFK or Newark runs, and that shows up in the spread rather than the average.
LaGuardia's worst case sits far closer to its best case than either of the other airports. If your schedule has no slack, that narrower spread is worth more than a shorter average journey time would be.
The practical consequence is that a two-hour buffer for a domestic LaGuardia departure is genuinely comfortable, where the same buffer at Newark would not be. We will tell you when you are cutting it fine rather than let you find out.
Making the most of the rebuilt terminals
LaGuardia's reconstruction produced a much better airport and a much less intuitive kerbside. The for-hire pickup zones now sit away from the arrivals doors, and the signage assumes you already know where you are going.
This is the one New York airport where meet-and-greet is genuinely faster than curbside rather than merely nicer. Your chauffeur walks in, takes the bags, and walks you to a vehicle already in the correct zone — which is quicker than finding that zone yourself.
On departures none of this applies. LaGuardia kerbside drop-off is straightforward, and the short walk from kerb to security is one of the better things about the rebuild.
Game days and the Grand Central Parkway
Citi Field sits directly on the LaGuardia approach, and a Mets home game pushes significant traffic onto the Grand Central Parkway. On a game day, add twenty minutes to any LaGuardia run and more if the game is finishing as you travel.
The US Open at Flushing Meadows is the larger version of the same problem, and it runs for a fortnight from late August. During it we plan LaGuardia departures as though they were JFK departures.
These are entirely predictable and entirely avoidable with an earlier departure, which is the sort of thing dispatch will raise with you when you book rather than after.
